Climate Action
Why climate action?
Climate projections in the Pemberton area predict droughts, floods, rising temperatures, glacial melt, wildfires, landslides, biodiversity loss, and more. Pemberton is also projected to see its population increase to over 18,000 people by 2051. Concerned citizens have voiced to us that they want local action they can be a part of, with their top concerns being climate action, food security, conservation, and housing. Taking climate action is necessary to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change while considering the area’s land and housing development. We believe to address climate change, and other environmental and social challenges tied to it, a collaborative approach to implementing solutions is required.
What are we doing?
In 2022, we received funding from Whistler Community Foundation to hire a Community Climate Action Coordinator, Andrea Blaikie, to work on a Community-based Climate Action Plan. Since then Andrea has completed public engagement with citizens and key stakeholders, increased public education and awareness through a climate action study group, a social media campaign and presentations at the Pemberton & District Public Library, and identified activities to foster community-based climate action in Pemberton. As we continue this work and implement our 2023-25 Strategic Plan, Stewardship Pemberton aims to expand its climate action work in both impact and reach.
We completed this work with respect to that which has already been done by the Village of Pemberton, Squamish-Lillooet Regional District, and the Regional Municipality of Whistler.
Take Climate Action
Every month we host Green Drinks, a community conversation on important environmental topics - like climate action. This happens on the second Monday of every month at 6:30 pm at Town Square.
