One Mile Lake Nature Centre

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has .”

— Margaret Mead

Attention - Community Feedback Request

For the past decade, the primary use for the One Mile Lake Nature Centre has been Nature Camp. With the decision to pause this program for the time being, we are seeking community feedback on desired uses for this space. The One Mile Lake Nature Centre was built to foster stewardship and we strive to continue this legacy through achieving our mission and vision.

History

The One Mile Lake Nature Centre is a Stewardship Pemberton Society initiative that originated out of a need to replace the Birkenhead River hatchery after it was decimated due to flooding. After years of hard work and fundraising, the building became operational. Programming and building use ebb, flow, and grow with the needs of the community and feedback.

The Centre was built with ecological integrity in mind. Using local contractors and hundreds of volunteer hours, the Centre boasts innovative technologies such as solar power, composting toilets, rainwater catchment, recycled materials, and a helical screw foundation to reduce the size of our ecological footprint. In 2011, the Centre was awarded a Union of British Columbia Municipalities Community Excellence Award.

The Centre started with a small educational salmon hatchery that complimented our past work with the Salmon in the Classroom program.

None of this would be possible without the hard-working volunteers who started it all, and our generous funders like the Department of Fisheries & Oceans, Pacific Salmon Foundation, Whistler Blackcomb Foundation EnviroFund, and BC Hydro.
