2025 Summer Nature Camps with The Woods
Outdoor Learning Programs
We are excited to announce a partnership which will see the return of nature camps happening at The One Mile Lake Nature Centre. We are welcoming The Woods Outdoor Learning Programs in association with The Nest Early Learning Centre. These camp are designed and run by The Woods Outdoor Learning Programs to immerse children in hands-on outdoor learning experiences that blend teacher-led instruction with exploratory play. Through nature-based activities, water play, hikes, and group games, campers will develop independence, build friendships, and foster a deeper appreciation for the environment.
These camps will include water play; children will need to provide their own PFD or complete a swimming competency demonstration to be able to swim without. For camp information, and registration please click the button below.
History
The One Mile Lake Nature Centre is a Stewardship Pemberton Society initiative that originated out of a need to replace the Birkenhead River hatchery after it was decimated due to flooding. After years of hard work and fundraising, the building became operational. Programming and building use ebb, flow, and grow with the needs of the community and feedback.
The Centre was built with ecological integrity in mind. Using local contractors and hundreds of volunteer hours, the Centre boasts innovative technologies such as solar power, composting toilets, rainwater catchment, recycled materials, and a helical screw foundation to reduce the size of our ecological footprint. In 2011, the Centre was awarded a Union of British Columbia Municipalities Community Excellence Award.
The Centre started with a small educational salmon hatchery that complimented our past work with the Salmon in the Classroom program.
None of this would be possible without the hard-working volunteers who started it all, and our generous funders like the Department of Fisheries & Oceans, Pacific Salmon Foundation, Whistler Blackcomb Foundation EnviroFund, and BC Hydro.
