School Garden
The Pemberton Secondary School (PSS) Garden provides students with hands-on learning opportunities to grow food for their school. We began partnering with PSS on the garden project in Fall of 2023, and it’s been a growing success since!
Students help tend to the garden from seed to harvest! By working in the garden, students learn not just how to grow food, but why it’s important - for our local food system and our community.
Students experience the garden through regular class visits, a new “Agricultural Leadership” for-credit course, and summer employment opportunities. Many students simply enjoy hanging out in the garden, and love snacking on fresh fruits and vegetables.
The PSS Garden grows over 40 varieties of fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Last year, the garden produced 1,320lbs of food!
100% of the produce grown is used in school foods cooking classes, the free student community fridge, school cafeteria programs, and distributed to school families.
In fall of 2024 we received a grant from the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation Envirofund to rebuild two growing areas - doubling the size of the garden. We can’t wait for another season of growing and learning in the garden.
“It has been wonderful ‘shopping’ in our garden and creating tasty food with the amazing produce. I am proud of the shape the garden is in... it is so good to see it flourishing.”
— Daryl Treadway, PSS Teacher
“The highlight for me was getting to work outside and learn many things about managing and maintaining a garden... it was very satisfying to see what we planted and the reward it gave us.”
— Isla Inglis, PSS Student and Summer Garden Assistant
