Signal Hill Elementary Garden
The Signal Hill Elementary (SHE) Garden engages students in growing food and learning outside. The garden is rooted in reconciliation, healing, and land-based education, with produce used in an annual school-wide traditional Pit Cook. The SHE Garden began in 2020, and formalized a partnership with us in 2025 to better support and integrate the project into our Feasting For Change Program.
Each Wednesday during the growing season, classes come out to the garden to learn hands-on and help grow food for their school community. Students also enjoy the garden during recess and lunch!
Each year, hundreds of students participate in “Garden Wednesday” programs, with lessons ranging from pollinator habitats, to seed starting, to food security!
The annual traditional Pit Cook works closely with Indigenous support workers and Lil’wat Nation knowledge-keepers to cook and celebrate produce from the garden. Volunteers steward a fire through the night to cook the vegetables, with salmon cooked on the fire during the day. All students attend the event, and celebrate the food and traditions -it’s always a highlight of the year!
